SnagIt 13.1

Take screenshots, record videos of your desktop, and share them right away

Despite its extremely ease of use, you do not need a tool like SnagIt to take a screenshot of your desktop or of any active window on your screen. Windows offers you simple key combinations for that – what Windows lacks and SnagIt has plenty of is image editing and enhancing tools, creative effects, a direct link to your favorite social network, and a simple webcam and screen recording functionality. This is what you get for a comparatively highly-priced license. It would be great if only they could throw in a more sophisticated desktop recording functionality into the bargain, but regrettably, SnagIt’s main business seems to be capturing and enhancing images. And when it comes to that, they are top of their class.

Taking a screenshot of whatever’s taking place on your desktop is like an art in itself for SnagIt. Settings, presets, menu options... nothing seems to be enough when it comes to taking the perfect shot. You can take a picture of the whole screen, a selected region, a scrolling window, a panoramic view, of your scanner or your webcam, and even capture multiple areas at once. You can capture the cursor, add freehand drawings to it, add effects, etc., and preview it all on the program’s editor right away. Sophisticated as these screen capture settings may seem, they pale in comparison with the variety and the quality of styles, effects, clipart, and enhancing tools that the editor in question offers.

Here is where no other screen capture software comes close to SnagIt. Add plain or shadowed arrows in multiple shapes and colors, text boxes, callouts with your favorite color and outline, customized stamps and shapes (cursor pointers included), paint selected areas, add creative effects, crop, cut, erase, highlight, blur or magnify selected objects – anything to make your screenshots as explanatory and unique as possible. The possibilities are endless, and they are so easy to use that you won’t need to be an expert graphic designer to surprise your audiences with your enhanced screenshots.

If only its video recording capabilities were half as sophisticated as those implemented for the screen captures, its predominance in the screen capture software market would be even harder to beat. The way it stands now, you can record a selected region or the full screen, enable or disable either or both the system and the external audio feeds (i.e., a microphone), and decide if the cursor movements will be included in the video or not. When it comes to choosing the video and audio output quality, both in terms of codecs and resolution, SnagIt shows a serious lack of intent that might deter a number of potential users from trying this tool. Other than that, SnagIt deserves its top-rank position among the plethora of screen capturing software apps available.
